Devon Manik

Devon Manik is from Resolute Bay, Nunavut, where he has lived his whole life. Growing up, Devon traveled a lot. He has visited almost all of Canada and in 2019, he travelled along the west coast of Greenland and across to the Canadian High Arctic with Students on Ice! Visiting Greenland for the first time was a dream come true for Devon! He owns a dog team with a total of 15 dogs. He taught himself and the dogs how to dogsled by watching videos of Qaanaaq hunters and their ways of dogsledding, and also tips from friends and family. He is currently the only person in town who uses dogs to hunt throughout the year. Living off the land and sharing food with the community is an important way of life for Inuit. In the near future, Devon hopes to have his own outfitters business, taking people on dog sled rides and hikes. He is also a photographer, capturing adventures and day-to-day life.

Emma Denton

Emma Denton is currently completing her BSc degree in Geography at Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. As a Students on Ice 2019 alum, she has a keen interest in the protection of Arctic biodiversity and global conservation initiatives. Emma is an active member of the Belfast Hills society and regularly volunteers with environmental management programmes. From her experience on the expedition and through her education, she believes climate change, habitat loss and ocean acidification are the most important issues of our time. Emma hopes to pursue a career in environmental conservation and raise awareness of what we, as a species, can do to conserve our extraordinary planet.
