In 2019 SOI’s inaugural Climate Action Cohort (CAC) attended COP25 to listen, learn and engage in international climate policy. What is it like to attend an event like this? How are youth participating in this space? What are youth hoping is the future of climate policy? Join 2019 CAC members Shakti, Will, Soomin and Mick to hear their answers.
About Mick Jefferies
Mick Jefferies was born and raised in the Southern Labrador community of Charlottetown but moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick to pursue a Bachelor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Leadership. He is currently completing a law degree at UNB. Mick is a Students On Ice alumni from the 2015 Arctic expedition. Mick also joined the Climate Action Cohort in 2019 with specific passions relating to storytelling, food security, and the intersectional impacts of climate change. Mick is excited to share his experiences from COP25 and to have meaningful conversations about climate action.
About Shakti Ramkumar
Shakti Ramkumar is the Communications Manager at Student Energy, a global youth-led organization empowering the next generation of energy leaders, with a network of over 50,000 young people in 120 countries. She is passionate about empowering young people to transform our global energy system to one that is sustainable and equitable, in order to urgently address climate change. As an alumna of the 2014 Students on Ice Antarctic Expedition, Shakti is also part of the inaugural Climate Action Cohort. With the CAC, she attended COP 25 in Madrid, with a focus on food systems and land use in relation to climate change. Shakti also served as the Director of Common Energy UBC, one of the university’s largest student sustainability organizations, where she worked with other student groups to successfully advocate for the university to include climate action and climate justice in its long-term strategic plan. Shakti holds a degree from the University of British Columbia, in Geography with an Environment & Sustainability concentration
About Soomin Han
Soomin Han (she/her) is a climate justice activist, 2017 SOI Arctic Expedition alum, a member of the 2019 Climate Action Cohort, and a pottery fanatic. She is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Environmental Studies with a Concentration in Policy & Law at the University of Manitoba on Treaty 1 territory. She integrates environmental justice and policy in all aspects of her life as a Research Assistant studying the social policy gaps that exist in Manitoba, a Sustainable Development Goals Coordinator with the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Youth, and as a member of various local social justice groups and projects. You can always find her at the tofu aisle of the grocery store or making tiny zines!
About Will Sanderson
Will is an SOI Alumnus from the 2014 Antarctic Expedition and the 2018 Arctic Circle Assembly Delegation. After attending COP25 with the 2019 Climate Action Cohort, Will has been working on a community project to connect local youth to municipal climate policy. In the summer, Will works as an outdoor educator leading canoe, kayak and hiking trips for high school students. He is currently studying at Western University as a TD Scholar, pursuing a dual degree in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration.
