On August 1, 2019, the Government of Canada and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) announced interim protection for Tuvaijuittuq and an Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement for the establishment of Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area.
This is the culmination of several years of collaboration between Inuit, the Government of Canada and conservation organizations. Not only does this agreement provide job creation and a collaborative governance model, but Canada now has protection measures in place for nearly 14% of its marine and coastal areas – more than 427,000 square kilometres. An area larger than Norway.
