Kyra Flaherty, SOI Arctic 2016 Alum, and tourism development coordinator with the Nunavut government experienced a flash of internet fame when her TikTok account (@arcticmakeup) went viral for exposing the high food costs in northern Canada this past year.
Apples for $6.50/KG, soup for $7/can, and aluminum foil for $70/roll, were all among the items that shocked users from Southern Canada, sparking a flood of donations to Ms. Flaherty. When up to 40 boxes of donated food arrived on a weekly basis, Ms. Flaherty took it upon herself to divide the goods, and parcel them out to the community. As donations continue to come in for the Iqaluit community, Ms. Flaherty encourages people to redirect their continued kindness to the local food bank.
